06-02 *At the State Finals held at Forest Hills Northern, freshman A.J. McConnell earned a medal in the 3200 meter run, running a personal best time of 9:46.88.  Congratulations to all the Sparta athletes who qualified for the State Finals:  Jim Carrow, Joe Skripka, Mike Snowden, Mike Haskell, Jodi Bosscher, and Joy Matthews.


05-29 * At the John Bos Meet, Jim Carrow placed 6th in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.2.


05-24 *  The Sparta 9th and 10th grade boys came away as champions at the Ovid-Elsie Meet!  Check the results page for a complete listing of all events.


05-22 * At the Meet of Champions, A. J. McConnell placed 2nd in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:35.23.  Placing 4th in the 3200 meter relay was the team of Skripka, Haskell, Snowden, and McConnell.  Jim Carrow was 7th in the 110 meter hurdles.  Caitlin Hoseth placed 3rd for the girls in the 400 meter run with a time of 1:02.37.  Jodi Bosscher was 8th in the pole vault at 9'.


05-18 * The weather was close to perfect for the Regional Meet at Muskegon Orchard View.  Qualifying for the State Finals for the girls was Jodi Bosscher in the pole vault and in the 300 meter hurdles, where she bettered her own school record with a time of 47.9  Joy Matthews qualified in the 100 meter hurdles.  The boys will be represented at the State Finals by the regional champion 3200 meter relay team of Joe Skripka, Mike Snowden, Mike Haskell and A.J. McConnell.  McConnell also qualified in the 3200 meter run, running a personal best time of 9:50.4.   Jim Carrow  qualified for the State Finals in the 110 meter hurdles, running a personal best time of 15.0.


05-17 * At the JV Conference Meet at Sparta, Erin Anderson won the high jump and Sara Nemecek won the 1600 meter run in the girls' competition.  For the boys, Kevin Coalter won both hurdle events, setting a new meet record of 43.36 in the 300 meter hurdles.  Bryan Wahlfield won the long jump.


05-15 *  The OK-Gold Conference Meet was held at Cedar Springs on May 14 and 15.  Both the boys and girls finished in 5th place.   For the girls, Jodi Bosscher set a new meet record in the pole vault at 9' 6".   Caitlin Hoseth placed 2nd in the 400 meter run with a time of 1:02.6.  For the boys, the 3200 meter relay team of Joe Skripka, Mike Snowden, Mike Haskell and A.J. McConnell won their event.  McConnell also placed 2nd in both the 1600 meter and 3200 meter runs, running personal best times in each.  Jim Carrow placed 2nd in the 110 hurdles and 4th in the 300 meter hurdles.  Check the results page for a complete list of Sparta results.


05-08 * In a meet with South Christian at Sparta, the boys lost by a score of 73 - 64.  Winning events for the Spartans were: Greg Kuszpit in the discus; Mike Badgerow in the high jump; Joe VanderHyde in the shot put; Jim Carrow in the 110 meter hurdles; Joe Skripka in the 1600 meter run; Mike Snowden in the 800 meter run; A.J. McConnell in the 3200 meter run; and Sparta's 3200 meter relay team.  The girls were hampered by several key injuries, and lost by a score of 109 - 28.  Stacy Vogel's first place finish in the shot put was the only win for the girls.


05-05 * The Sparta boys placed first out of 8 teams at the Red Hawk Invitational.  A.J. McConnell won both the 1600 meter run and 3200 meter run.  Mike Badgerow won the high jump.   The Sparta girls placed third, with Jodi Bosscher winning both the pole vault and the 300 meter hurdles.   Also winning their event and setting a meet record was the 800 meter relay team of Caitlin Hoseth, Bosscher, Amy Sjogren, and Ashley Johnson.


05-03 * Both the boys and girls won by a decisive score over Wyoming Park.   The boys were winners by a score of 84 - 52, and the girls won 92 - 45.  For the boys, first place finishers were: Badgerow in the high jump; Kimble in the pole vault; J. Carrow in the 100 meter hurdles; VanderHyde in the shot put and long jump; Haskell in the 800 meter run; Coalter in the 300 meter hurdles; McConnell in the 1600 meter run; and Kuszpit in the discus.  Kate Dietrich had a very successful day, placing first in the 100 meter hurdles, the high jump, and the 300 meter hurdles.  Other first place finishers were: Sjogren in the long jump; Todd in the 800 meter run; Hoseth in the 400 meter dash; Bosscher in the pole vault; the 1600 meter relay team of Todd, Sjogren, Young, and Rodgers; the 800 meter relay team of Sjogren, Bluitt, Bosscher, and Hoseth; and the 3200 meter relay team of Rodgers, Debski, Young, and Greenup.


04-30 * In a meet at Kenowa Hills, the boys came away with a win by a score of 84 - 53.  The Spartans won with a great team effort, as they won 12 of the 17 events.  The boys now have a dual record of 5 wins and 1 loss.   Jim Carrow won both hurdle events, and Joe VanderHyde won the long jump and the shot put (personal best of 45' 8").  A.J. McConnell had a personal best of 4:37.88 in the 1600 meter run.  The girls were defeated by Kenowa Hills by a score of 83 - 54.  Jodi Bosscher placed first in both the pole vault and 300 meter hurdles. The dual record for the girls team is 2 wins and 4 losses.


04-26 * Both the boys and girls defeated Wayland in a meet at Sparta.  The girls won by a big margin (109 - 27) while the boys pulled out a squeaker (70 - 67) with a great team effort!  Jodi Bosscher bettered her own school record in the pole vault with a new height of 9' 6".  Many Millenium Milestones were set at the meet!  Check the results page for the complete results.


04-23 * The Sparta boys defeated Unity Christian by a score of 91 to 32, while the girls lost 72 to 51.  Joe VanderHyde, Jim Carrow and Tyson Mengel were first place finishers in four events. For the girls, first place finishers were: Katrina Todd in the 800 meter run; Ashley Greenup in the 3200 meter run; the 800 meter relay team of Michelle Bluitt, Jodi Bosscher, Caitlin Hoseth, and Amy Sjogren; and the 400 meter relay team of Bluitt, Joy Matthews, Sjogren, and Bosscher.


04-21 * The Tri-Level Meet was held today, with the girls' competition at Sparta and the boys' meet at Coopersville.  In the 8-team competition, the grade 11-12 boys finished  fourth. First place finishes were earned by the 3200 meter relay team and by Joe VanderHyde in the long jump.  The grade 9-10 boys placed second, and had first place wins by Tyson Mengel in the 100 meter dash, A.J. McConnell in the 1600 meter run, and Joe Skripka in the 3200 meter run.  The 11-12 girls were third, and had first place wins by Jodi Bosscher in the pole vault (9' 2", a new school record) and by Joy Matthews in the 100 meter hurdles.  The 9-10 girls were also third, with first place finishes by Michelle Bluitt in the shot put, Ashley Greenup in the 3200 meter run, and the 3200 meter relay team.


04-19 * In a meet at Cedar Springs, the boys pulled out a close one while the girls unfortunately lost a close contest.  First place finishers for the boys were: Joe VanderHyde in the shot put, discus and long jump; Corey Kimble in the pole vault; Jim Carrow in the 110 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles; A.J. McConnell in the 3200 meter run; and the 400 meter relay team of J. Carrow, Tyson Mengel, Chris Carrow, and Jason Ingersoll.  In the girls' meet, first place finishers were Amy Sjogren in the long jump; Joy Matthews in the 100 meter hurdles; Jodi Bosscher in the 300 meter hurdles and pole vault; Katrina Todd in the 800 meter run; Ashley Greenup in the 3200 meter run; and the 800 meter and 1600 meter relay teams.


04-14 * Sparta hosted the Sparta Co-ed Relays today.   In addition to the Spartans, the other teams competing were Belding, Caledonia, Cedar Springs, Hastings, Kent City, Rockford, and Tri-County.   Caledonia was the winner, while Sparta placed 4th overall.  First place finishers for the Spartans were Caitlin Hoseth, Jodi Bosscher, Jim Carrow, and Tyson Mengel in the 800 meter relay, and Kate Dietrich, Kevin Coalter, Joy Matthews and Jim Carrow in the shuttle hurdle relay.


04-12 * In cold and extremely  windy conditions, the Sparta boys and girls prevailed over Belding.  The girls were led by the following first place finishers: Katrina Todd, Carrie Debski, Ashley Greenup, and Sara Rodgers in the 3200 meter relay; Michelle Bluitt in the 100 meter hurdles; Brittany May in the 1600 meter run; Stacy Vogel in the 300 meter hurdles; Todd in the 800 meter run;  Greenup in the 3200 meter run; and the 1600 meter relay team of Jodi Bosscher, Caitlin Hoseth, Amy Sjogren and Todd.  First place finishers for the boys were: Joe VanderHyde in the discus and shot put; Mike Badgerow in the high jump; Mike Haskell in the 800 meter run; A.J. McConnell in the 1600 meter run and 3200 meter run; Jim Carrow in the 110 meter hurdles; Kevin Coalter in the 300 meter hurdles; the 3200 meter relay team of Haskell, Ken Sokolowski, McConnell, and Joe Skripka; and the 1600 meter relay team of Haskell, Coalter, VanderHyde and Joseph Yost.


04-10 * Both Sparta girls and boys lost to Caledonia at Tuesday's home meet.  Jodi Bosscher set a new school record in the pole vault with a height of 9' 0".  Other girls earning first place finishes were: Amy Sjogren in the long jump; Caitlin Hoseth in the 400 meter dash; and the 800 meter relay team of Michelle Bluitt, Bosscher, Sjogren, and Hoseth.  In the boys' competition, freshman A. J. McConnell placed first in the 3200 meter run with a time of 10:20.7, earning him the #1 spot in that event on the Millenium Milestones.  Other Spartans placing first were Jim Carrow in both the 300 meter hurdles and 110 meter hurdles, and Tyson Mengel in the 100 meter dash.


04-07 * The track team participated in the Eagle Relays in Kent City today, and both boys and girls came away as meet champions.  The teams were divided into two divisions, and the boys placed first in their division with the top score overall at the meet.  First place finishers were: the team of  Bryan Wahlfield and Jason Ingersoll in the long jump; the team of Mike Badgerow and Dave Elliott in the high jump; the 12,800 meter relay team of McConnell, Skripka, DeRivera, and Sokolowski; Jim Carrow in the 110 meter hurdles; and the shuttle hurdles team of Coalter, Ingersoll, Courtade, and J. Carrow.  The girls also won their division, and had the second highest score of all the teams.  Placing first for the girls were: the 800 meter relay team of May,  Rodgers, Greenup, and Debski; Jodi Bosscher in the 300 meter hurdles; the team of Matthews, Sjogren, Puitt, and Todd in the Kent City Relay; Joy Matthews in the 100 meter hurdles; the sprint medley team of Todd, Sjogren, Matthews, and Bosscher; and the shuttle hurdles team of Dietrich, Vogel, Sjogren, and Matthews. 


03-28 * The Sparta boys placed first at the Comstock Park Quad, defeating teams from Byron Center, Kenowa Hills, and Comstock Park.   Spartans placing first in their events were: Corey Kimble in the pole vault; Joe VanderHyde in the shot put; A. J. McConnell in both the 1600 meter and 3200 meter runs; Tyson Mengel in the 200 meter dash; the 400 meter relay team of Moore, Wahlfield, C. Carrow, and Ingersoll; and the 800 meter relay team of J. Carrow, Cumings, C. Carrow, and Mengel.   Several new Millenium Milestones were set.  The Sparta girls placed third in the meet.   First place finishers for the girls were: Jodi Bosscher in the pole vault and 300 meter hurdles; Joy Matthews in the 110 meter high hurdles;  Ashley Greenup in the 3200 meter run; and the 800 meter relay team.


03-12 * Today was the first day of track practice for the 2001 season!
