05/31 -- The State Finals for Division 2 were held at Caledonia High School.  A.J. McConnell placed 2nd in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:15.36 and earned All-State honors, improving his school record in the 1600 by 6 seconds.  He placed 5th in the 3200 meter run at 9:40.87.   Freshman Lisa Krupp tied for 5th place in the pole vault at 9' 6".  Also representing Sparta at the State Finals were Carrie Debski, Ashley Greenup, Nick Montgomery, Joe Yost, Tyson Mengel, Sean Moody, Chris Carrow and Bryan Wahlfield.


05/26 -- It's a girl!

Taylor Elaine Smith made her debut at 10:06 p.m., weighing in at 8 lbs. even and 21" long.   Congratulations to Coach Smith, Tammi, Trent and Thomas!

05/22 -- At the John Bos Meet at Houseman Field, A.J. McConnell set a new school record in the 3200 meter run in a time of 9:35.8.   The 800 meter relay team of Joe Yost, Chris Carrow, Bryan Wahlfield and Tyson Mengel placed 5th.

At the Ovid-Elsie Grades 9 &10 Meet, the Sparta girls were meet champions out of a 14-team field, and the boys placed 8th.   Jessy Rollston had a personal best in the discus at 92' 10½", and Justin Chapman had a personal best in the shot put at 40' 5" -- both were Millinium Milestone freshman records.


05/20 -- First place finishers for the Spartans at the Sparta Co-ed Relays were:  the 800 meter relay team of Tomi Tomson, Heidi Momber, Bryan Wahlfield and Tyson Mengel; the 3200 meter relay team of Ben Klenk, Joe Skripka, Amanda Young and Kaileigh Russo; the Sparta Medley relay team of Momber, Ashley Johnson, Chris Carrow and Mengel; and the 400 meter relay team of Momber, Tomson, Sean Moody and Carrow.


05/19 -- At the Champion of Champions Meet at Rogers, Carrie Debski was 5th in the 3200 meter run and Lisa Krupp placed 5th in the pole vault.  For the boys A. J. McConnell was 3rd in the 1600 meter run, and the 400 meter relay team of Bryan Wahlfield, Tyson Mengel, Sean Moody and Chris Carrow placed 5th.


05/16 -- At the Regional Meet at Muskegon Orchard View, the boys finished in 2nd place out of a 15-team field.  A.J. McConnell won the 1600 meter run in an exciting race with a time of 4:21.3.  The 400 meter relay team of Bryan Wahlfield, Tyson Mengel, Sean Moody and Chris Carrow, took first place and set a new school record with a time of 44.2. The 800 meter relay team (Joe Yost, Carrow, Wahlfield and Mengel) also placed first. Also qualifying for the State Finals on May 31 were Nick Montgomery in the high jump, Carrow in the 100 meter dash, and McConnell in the 3200 meter run.

Lisa Krupp qualified for the State Finals by placing 2nd in the pole vault.  Ashley Greenup and Carrie Debski qualified in the 3200 meter run.  Other Sparta girls who earned points at the Regional were Tomi Tomson, Kaileigh Russo, Heidi Momber and Ashley Johnson.


05/15 -- At the JV Conference Meet at Sparta, the Sparta girls took first place.  First place finishers were Kristen Bergstrom, Katie Cheslek, Kami Cowden, Naomi Reyburn, Amanda Young, Kristi Ingersoll, and the 800, 1600, and 3200 meter relay teams.

The boys finished in second place.   First place finishers were Josh Carter, Pete Antor, and the 3200 meter relay team of Jason Farlow, Aiden Fairman, J.J. Shangle and Randy Jacobsen.


05/12 and 5/13 -- The OK-Gold Conference Meet was held at Hastings.  The boys placed 2nd in the meet behind Cedar Springs.   First place finishers for the Spartans were Tim Stark in the discus, A.J. McConnell in the 1600 meter run, and Chris Carrow,Tyson  Mengel, Sean Moody and Bryan Wahlfield in the 400 meter relay.  Their first place finishes earned them All-Conference honors.  Also earning points for the Spartans were Barry Volkers, Victor Jaramillo, Curt Meyer, Nick Montgomery, Tim VanNatter, Mike Haskell, Joe Skripka, Kevin Coalter, Joe Yost, and Ben Klenk.

The girls placed 6th in the meet.  A highlight of the meet for the Spartans was a school record performance by Lisa Krupp in the pole vault at 9' 11½.  Krupp earned All-Conference honors along with Carrie Debski, who placed in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs and the 3200 meter relay.  Also earning points were Michelle Bluitt, Jessy Rollston, Sara Young, Sara Rodgers, Kaileigh Russo, Tomi Tomson, Heidi Momber, Ashley Johnson, Ashley Greenup, and Justine Todd.


05/09 -- The girls defeated Hasting 101 - 35. Winning events for the Spartans were: Jessy Rollston in the discus; Tomi Tomson in the long jump and 100 meter hurdles; Lisa Krupp in the pole vault; Michelle Bluitt in the shot put; the 3200 meter  relay team of Kim Rodgers, Stacey Armock, Amanda Young, and Kaileigh Russo; Heidi Momber in the 100 and 200 meter dashes; the 400 and 800 meter relay teams of Kaileigh Russo, Ashley Johnson, Heidi Momber, Kristi Ingersol, and Tomi Tomson; Kaileigh Russo in the 400 meter dash; Naomi Reyburn in the 300 meter hurdles; Sara Young in the 800 meter run; Carrie Debski in the 3200 meter run; and the 1600 meter relay team of Krista Ingersoll, Sara Young, Justine Todd, and Kaileigh Russo.

The boys ended their dual season 7-1 with a decisive win over Hastings.  First place finishers for the Spartans were:   Nick Montgomery in the high jump; Barry Volkers in the shot put; Tim Stark in the discus; Josh Carter in the pole vault; Chris Carrow in the 100 meter dash; Tyson Mengel in the 200 meter dash; Joe Yost in the 400 meter dash; A.J. McConnell in the 1600 meter run; Randy Jacobsen in the 3200 meter run; the 400 meter relay team of Bryan Wahlfield, Mengel, Carrow, and Sean Moody; the 800 meter relay team of Yost, Carrow, Wahlfield and Mengel; and the 1600 meter relay team of Yost, Ben Klenk, Moody and Kevin Coalter. The OK-Gold Conference Meet will be held on Monday and Tuesday at Hastings.


05/05 -- The Sparta boys defeated Kenowa Hills 88-48.  First place finishers for the Spartans were Kevin Coalter, Joe Yost, Chris Carrow, Bryan Wahlfield, Tyson Mengel, A.J. McConnell, Curt Meyer, Tim Stark, Nick Montgomery and Josh Carter. The Spartans improved their record to 6-1 in the OK-Gold with only one week left before the conference meet.

The girls lost to an undefeated Kenowa Hills squad by a score of 94-43. Winning events for the Spartans were Tomi Tomson in the 100 meter hurdles, Michelle Bluitt in the shot put, and Lisa Krupp in the pole vault.


05/01 -- In a home meet against Wayland, the Sparta boys easily outscored their opponents by a score of 102-26.  First place finishers were: Tim Stark in the discus; Nick Montgomery in the high jump; Barry Volkers in the shot put; Kevin Coalter in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles; Chris Carrow in the 100 meter dash; A.J. McConnell in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs; Mike Haskell in the 800 meter run; Bryan Wahlfield in the 200 meter dash; the 400 meter relay team of Wahlfield, Carrow, Tyson Mengel, and Sean Moody; the 800 relay team of Joe Yost, Carrow, Wahlfield, and Mengel; the 1600 meter relay team of Yost, Haskell, Ben Klenk, and Mengel; and the 3200 meter relay team of McConnell, Joe Skripka, Haskell and Tim VanNatter.

The girls also scored a big win over Wayland, winning 92-36.  Winning events for the girls were: Michelle Bluitt in the discus and shot put; Tomi Tomson in the long jump and 100 meter hurdles; Heidi Momber in the 100 and 200 meter dash; Carrie Debski in the 1600 meter run; Kaileigh Russo in the 400 meter dash; Sara Young in the 800 meter run; Ashley Greenup in the 3200 meter run; the 400 meter relay team of Krista Ingersoll, Momber, Ashley Johnson, and Tomson; the 800 relay team of Russo, Momber, Johnson, and Tomson; the 1600 meter relay team of Lisa Krupp, Young, Justine Todd, and Russo; and the 3200 meter relay team of Debski, Russo, Young, and Sara Rodgers.


04/28 -- The girls track team won the meet against Unity Christian by a score of 82-55. Winning events for the Spartans were: Michelle Bluitt in the discus and shot put; Heidi Momber in the high jump; Heather Blondin in the long jump; Amy Miedzielec, Stacey Armock, Amanda Young, and Kim Rodgers in the 3200 meter relay; Tomi Tomson in the high hurdles; Carrie Debski in the 1600 meter run; Kaileigh Russo in the 400 meter dash; and Ashley Greenup in the 3200 meter run.

The boys defeated Unity Christian 99-37. First place finishers for the Spartans were: Tim Stark in the discus; Kyle Alber in the long jump:  Josh Carter in the pole vault; Barry Volkers in the shot put; Kevin Coalter in the 110 meter hurdles; Nick Montgomery in the high jump; Chris Carrow in the 100 meter dash; Tim VanNatter in the 800 meter run; Zach Hodyna in the 3200 meter run; VanNatter,  J.J. Shangle, Ken Shangle, and Chad Cordes in the 3200 meter relay; the 800 meter relay team of JoeYost, Carrow, Tyson Mengel, and Bryan Wahlfield; and the 400 meter relay team of Sean Moody, Mengel, Carrow and Wahlfield.

04/26 -- The Sparta boys finished first with a meet record 151 points at the Cougar Invitational. First place finishers were Barry Volkers, Joe Skripka, Mike Haskell, Tim VanNatter, A.J. McConnell, Kevin Coalter, Chris Carrow, Joe Yost, Bryan Wahlfield, Tyson Mengel, Sean Moody, Ben Klenk, Randy Jacobsen, Jason Farlow, Aidan Fairman, Zach Hodyna, Seth Larson, Chris Moore, J.J. Shangle, Tony Bellows, Taichiro, John Tawney, and Justin Chapman.  

The girls finished in 4th place.  Winning medals for the Spartans were:  Lisa Krupp in the pole vault; Michelle Bluitt in the shot put; Carrie Debski in the1600 and 3200 meter runs; Ashley Greenup in the 3200 meter run; and the 400 and 1600 meter relay teams. The Sparta J.V. girls dominated, winning 6 of the 10 events. Winning events were: Katie Cheslek in the shot put; Heather Sevigny in the discus; the 3200 meter relay team of Amy Miedzielec, Kim Rodgers, Stacey Armock, and Amanda Young; the 800 and 400 meter relay teams of Jessica Bowers, Heather Blondin, Theresa Rapp, Kami Cowden, and Chelsie Snowden; and the 1600 meter relay team of Grace Dietrich, Nicole Lockard, Stacy Armock, and Amy Miedzielec.


04/24-- In a meet at Cedar Springs, the girls pulled out an exciting win over Cedar by a score of  69 to 67. Winning events for the Spartans were: Michelle Bluitt in the shot put and discus;  the 3200 meter relay team of Sara Young, Kaileigh Russo, Sara Rodgers, and Carrie Debski; Kristen Bergstrom in the pole vault; Carrie Debski in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs; and the 1600 meter relay team of Lisa Krupp, Sara Young, Justine Todd and Kaileigh Russo. 

The boys were defeated by a score of 54 - 83.  Outstanding performances were recorded by Joe Skripka in the 3200 meter relay; A.J. McConnell in the 1600 meter run; Barry Volkers and Victor Jaramillo in the shot put; Joe Yost and Ben Klenk in the 400 meter dash; Joe Yost, Chris Carrow, Bryan Wahlfield, Tyson Mengel and Sean Moody in the sprint relays; Tim Stark, Curt Meyer and Barry Volkers with a sweep in the discus; Mike Haskell, Yost, Klenk and Mengel in the 1600 relay; and Randy Jacobsen in the 3200 meter run.


04/19 -- At the Boys Tri Level Meet at Coopersville the Spartans won the 11th and 12th grade meet with 122 points, 4 points ahead of Cedar Springs. First place finishers for the Spartans were Joe Yost, Tyson Mengel, Chris Carrow, Bryan Wahlfield and Sean Moody. Other medal winners were Mike Haskell, Tim VanNatter, Joe Skripka, A.J. McConnell, Pete Antor, Joe Ferrell, Nick Montgomery, Kevin Coalter, Curt Meyer, Barry Volkers, Ben Klenk, Randy Jacobsen, Jason Farlow, Chris Moore, John Tawney and Andy Bird. 

The Girls Tri Level Meet was held at Sparta.  The Spartans tied for 1st place in the grades 9-10 division and won the overall championship.   Winning events for the Spartans were:  Lisa Krupp in the pole vault; the 800 meter relay team of Kaileigh Russo, Krista Ingersoll, Heidi Momber, and Tomi Tomson; and Carrie Debski in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. There were many outstanding performances by both squads.


04/15 -- With temperatures in the low 80's, the Spartans hosted Caledonia in an OK-Gold conference dual. The boys won by a score of 96 -41. The Spartans swept the shot and disc with Curt Meyer, Tim Stark, Barry Volkers and Victor Jaramillo. Other first place finishers were Nick Montgomery, Mike Haskell, Tim VanNatter, Joe Skripka, A.J. McConnell, Kevin Coalter, Chris Carrow, Joe Yost, Tyson Mengel, Sean Moody and Bryan Wahlfield. Other stellar performances were recorded by Eric Owen, Nick Schweitzer and Russ Szumski in the discus.

The girls lost 48 to 89. Winning events for the Spartans were: Tomi Tomson in the long jump; Kristen Bergstrom in the pole vault; Carrie Debski  in the 3200 meter run; and the 1600 meter relay team of Sara Young, Lisa Krupp, Justine Todd and Kaileigh Russo. Several girls had career personal bests, including Michelle Bluitt, Jessy Rollston, Kristen Bergstrom and Tomi Tomson.


04/12 -- At the Eagle Relays at Kent City, the Sparta boys placed first in their division and first overall.  Chris Carrow won the 100 meter dash in a time of 11.22 and ran on 3 winning relay teams.  The girls finished second in their division, and were led by a second place finish in the pole vault by Lisa Krupp and Naomi Reyburn.  For complete meet results, go to the Results page.


04/10 -- The Spartans participated in a scrimmage with Kent City and Cedar Springs at Kent City.  The scrimmage provided a change of pace from the regular practice routine, and was a tune-up for Saturday's Kent City Eagle Relays.


04/02 -- In the first home meet of the 2003 track season, the boys defeated South Christian by a score of 90 - 47.  First place finishers for the Spartans were:  Tim Stark in the discus; Nick Montgomery in the high jump; Clift in the long jump; Barry Volkers in the shot put; the 3200 relay team of Haskell, VanNatter, Skripka, and McConnell; Chris Carrow in the 100 meter dash; the 800 meter relay team of Carrow, Yost, Mengel and Moody; A.J. McConnell in the 1600 meter run; the 400 meter relay team of Wahlfield, Carrow, Moody and Mengel; Haskell in the 800 meter run; Carrow in the 200 meter dash; and the 1600 meter relay team of Yost, Coalter, Haskell and VanNatter. 

The girls were defeated by a score of 82 - 55.  Placing first for the Spartans were: Michelle Bluitt in the discus; Tomi Tomson in the 100 meter hurdles; the 800 meter relay team of Russo, Cowden, Johnson and Tomson; Carrie Debski (pictured) in the 3200 meter run; and the 1600 meter relay team of Reyburn, Krupp, Todd and Ingersoll.

03/31 --The girls lost in a meet at Wyoming Park 61 to 75. Winning events for the Spartans were:  the 3200 meter relay team of Sara Young, Sara Rodgers, Kaileigh Russo and Carrie Debski; Tomi Tomson in the 100 meter high hurdles; Sara Young in the 800 meter run;  Lisa Krupp in the pole vault;   Carrie Debski in the 1600 meter run; and the 1600 meter relay team of Sara Young, Katrina Todd, Krista Ingersoll, and Kaileigh Russo.  Jessy Rollston's performance in the discus (86'5½") earned her the place of top freshman and top spot overall on the Millenium Milestones.

The boys finished with a solid victory defeating Wyoming Park 84 - 53. First place finishers for the Spartans were:   Barry Volkers in the shot put; Nick Montgomery in the high jump; Kevin Coalter in the 110 meter hurdles; Chris Carrow, Tyson Mengel and Sean Moody in the two sprint relays along with Joe Yost and Bryan Wahlfield; A.J. McConnell in the 1600; Pete Antor in the 300 hurdles; Tim Stark in the discus; Mike Haskell in the 800; and Joe Ferrell with Yost, Haskell and Coalter in the 1600 relay.


03/26 -- The Spartans participated in their first meet of the season in a triangular meet vs. Kenowa Hills and Byron Center at Kenowa.  The boys placed first while the girls finished in second place.   Winning events for the girls were: Tomi Tomson in the100 meter high hurdles; the 800 meter relay team of Kaileigh Russo, Ashley Johnson, Heidi Momber, and Tomi Tomson; Ashley Johnson in the high jump; and Lisa Krupp in the pole vault. 

For the boys, first place finishers were: Curt Meyer in the discus; David Elliott in the high jump; Chris Carrow in the 100 meter; Kevin Coalter in the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles; Josh Carter in the pole vault (earning his letter); A.J. McConnell in the 1600 and 3200; Pete Antor in the long jump; Tim Stark in the discus; Tyson Mengel in the 200; the 400 relay team of Sean Moody, Bryan Wahlfield, Chris Carrow and Tyson Mengel; and the 800 relay team of Joe Yost, Sean Moody, Tyson Mengel and Chris Carrow.   Great job Spartans!


3/18 -- Distance runners Kim Rodgers, Sara Young, Sara Rodgers and Amanda Young enjoyed the warm temperatures in the 60's despite plenty of snow still on the ground!
