Cross Country Accomplishments

The 1962 Sparta Cross Country team was inducted into the Cross Country Hall of Fame as a group because of their outstanding team accomplishments.  They were the Class B State Cross Country Champions in 1962 and they earned the only state championship for Sparta in any sport.   The team was led by Judd Ring's 10th place finish.  He was followed by Russ Rood, Mel Guiles, Rick Kingsbury, Keith Holtzlander, Ron Andrus, and Carl Cranmer.   Coach Don Worm, who coached the team, was also inducted into the Hall of Fame.   He coached cross country at Sparta for 25 years.  In addition to the state championship, Worm's teams won 3 regional and 12 league championships throughout his tenure as coach.
