5-22-00 --- The Regional Meet @ Sparta found numerous Spartans advancing to the State Finals. The boys placed fourth and the girls fifth out of a 14-team field. A very cool and windy afternoon turned into a more pleasant evening for running. The 400 meter relay team of Jim Carrow, Mike Sidlauskas, Heath Kimble, and Ryan Mengel were Regional champions, as was Sarah Merdzinski in the 3200 meter run. Also qualifying for the State finals were: Sidlauskas in the discus; Kimble in the pole vault; Andrew Hitzeroth in the 800 meter run; R. Mengel in the 200 meter dash; the 1600 meter relay team of Sidlauskas, Hitzeroth, Tyson Mengel, and R. Mengel; Kristy Debski in the 3200 meter run; and Merdzinksi in the 1600 meter run.

5-06-00 --- It was a successful day at the Cedar Springs Invitational, as the boys and girls both placed first in an 8-team field. The 800 m. relay team of Jim Carrow, Mike Sidlauskas, Heath Kimble, and Ryan Mengel set a new meet record with a time of 1:34.10. Other Spartans placing first were Gabe Cotto in the long jump, Sidlauskas in the discus, Mengel in the 200 m. dash, and the 400 m. relay team of Carrow, Cotto, Kimble, and Mengel. The girls had individual first place finishes by Sarah Merdzinski in the 1600 and 800 m. runs, Kristy Debski in the 3200 m. run, and Jodi Bosscher in the 300 m. hurdles. The girls placed first in every relay: Jenny Hall, Merdzinski, Katrina Todd, and Debski in the 3200 m.; Hall, Ashley Johnson, Bosscher and Karina Sheldon in the 800 m.; Anna Sjogren, Amy Sjogren, Joy Mathews, and Sheldon in the 400 m.; and Hall, Todd, Bosscher, and Jeannie Debski in the 1600 m.

5-04-00 --- The Spartans ran against Forest Hills Northern on a warm and sunny day in Sparta. The girls won their meet by a score of 84 - 53. Jodi Bosscher won both the 100 m. and 300 m. hurdles, and was on the winning 800 m. relay team. The boys lost 89½ to 47½. Gabe Cotto jumped a personal best 19' 4½" in the long jump, and Mirek Vomela had a personal best in the 300 m. hurdles with a time of 44.09. Andrew Hitzeroth won both the 1600 m. run (4:48.10) and the 800 m. run (2:02.78).

5-01-00 --- The boys defeated Wayland by a score of 105 - 31. Andrew Hitzeroth, Mike Sidlauskas, and Ryan Mengel each placed first in four events. There were many personal best performances at the meet, highlighted by first place finishers Corey Kimble (13' in the pole vault) and Ryan Mengel (22.97 in the 200 m. dash).

4-24-00 --- The Spartans defeated Unity Christian, with Ryan Mengel placing first in four events.

4-22-00 --- At the 8-team grade-level invitational held at Allendale, the 11th and 12th grade team finished 3rd, and the 9th and 10th grade team finished 2nd. Mike Sidlauskas earned 4 first places in the 11-12 division.

4-17-00 --- The Sparta boys beat Belding, with Mike Sidlauskas placing 1st in four events.

4-13-00 --- The Spartans lost to the defending league champion, Caledonia. Ryan Mengel won the 200 m. dash, and anchored both the 800 meter and 400 meter relays to first place finishes.

4-11-00 --- The meet with South Christian was cancelled due to bad weather. It has been rescheduled for May 10 at Sparta.

4-08-00 --- The Eagle Invitational at Kent City was cancelled due to snow and cold weather.

4-05-00 --- The track team participated in a scrimmage with Kent City and Tri County. It was held at Kent City and the weather was breezy and 50°. Highlights for the boys: Joe VanderHyde got a personal best in the shot put, and Ryan Mengel ran a personal best in the 200. Tony Shelton won the 3200 m. run, and all 4 relay teams won.

3-30-00 --- At the annual Comstock Park Quadrangular Meet, the Sparta Boys Track team won with 100 points. They were followed by Comstock Park with 78, Kenowa Hills with 43, and Byron Center with 35. Mike Sidlauskas and Ryan Mengel each had 4 first place finishes.

3-27-00 and 3-28-00 --- The Sparta Boys and Girls Track teams kicked off their season in an indoor meet at Grand Valley State University with many fine performances in the 30-team field. Highlights: Mike Sidlauskas won the discus (outdoors) with a toss of 152'4", and the girls distance medley relay team of Sarah Merdzinski, Karina Sheldon, Jenny Hall, and Kristi Debski finished 3rd in 13:48.

3-17-00 and 3-18-00 --- A group of Sparta tracksters traveled to Ohio for an instructional track clinic. Fourteen team members and three coaches attended.

2-28-00 --- Coach Smith and Coach Thomas held a meeting for captains of the boys track squad. Attending the meeting were Ryan Mengel, Andrew Hitzeroth, Mike Sidlauskas, Heath Kimble, Bryan Gard, and Matt Korreck. They discussed the responsibilities of being a captain, team goals, and individual goals.
