05/30 -- MHSAA State Final at Zeeland

BOYS:  Senior Brandon VanDriel completed his high school career at Sparta with his third consecutive state championship in the 100 meter dash.  VanDriel will be running track next year at Michigan State University.  Senior Josh Patterson and sophomore Cody DeRuischer also earned All State honors by tying for seventh place in the pole vault at 13' 8".  Senior Nate Dahlgren earned All State in the 800 meter run placing seventh.

GIRLS:  Junior Andrea Kober earned All State honors placing eighth in the 100 meter hurdles and fourth in the 300 meter hurdles.   Kober improved her 300 meter hurdle school record to 45.86.

Other Spartans participating in the meet were Halley Love, Lydia Reyburn, Kelsey Blystone, Samantha Pfeffer, Chelsea Andrews, Eddie Mazurkiewicz and Matt Behrens.  Congratulations to all!

05/26 -- John Bos Meet at Forest Hills Northern

BOYS:  Senior Nate Dahlgren placed 2nd in the meet and set the school record in the 800 meter run with his time of 1:55.6.   The previous 800 meter record (1:56.9) was set in 1986 and was held by Kent City track coach Jeff Wilson.  Josh Patterson placed 4th in the pole vault at 14'.   Eddie Mazurkiewicz tied for 5th place in the 400 meter dash with a personal best time of 50.5. 

GIRLS:  The 400 meter relay team of Andrea Kober, Halley Love, Lydia Reyburn and Kelsey Blystone placed third in the meet and set the school record with their time of 51.3.  The previous record (51.6) was set in 1981 by the team of C. Cooperwood, M. Wyss, J. Rider, and A. Hubert.  Kober, Love, Reyburn and Blystone also placed third in the 800 meter relay.  In addition, Kober won the 300 meter hurdles and placed fifth in the 100 meter hurdles. Allison Scheidel placed fifth in the 1600 meter run.

05/23 -- MITCA Team State Meet at Jenison

BOYS:  The Sparta boys placed 6th in the MITCA state meet.  Brandon VanDriel set a new meet record in the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.77.  (Click here for video of VanDriel's race.)  Nate Dahlgren placed first in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:02.14.

GIRLS:  The Spartans were 7th in the girls' competition.  Andrea Kober won the 100 meter hurdles in a time of 15.73 and was third in the 300 meter hurdles.


05/19 -- JV Meet at Belding

BOYS:  The Spartans placed fourth in the meet.  Cody DeRuischer was first in the pole vault with 13' and Jake Gilman was first in the 1600 meter run in a time of 4:44.8.

GIRLS:  The Sparta girls were meet champions.  Individual first place finishers were Megan Heimbaugh with 17.2 in the 100 meter hurdles , Kelsey Blystone with 13.5 in the 100 meter dash and 28.1 in the 200 meter dash, and Allison Scheidel with 5:28.1 in the 1600 meter run.  The Spartans won all four relay events.

05/15 -- Regional at Coopersville  -  REGIONAL CHAMPIONS!

BOYS:  The Spartans used a great team effort to become the 2009 Regional Champions.  In a meet that went down to the last event, the Spartans prevailed beating out second place Whitehall 83-81.  First place finishers for the Spartans were Josh Patterson in the pole vault, Brandon VanDriel in the 100 meter dash, Eddie Mazurkiewicz in the 400 meter dash, and the 800 meter relay team of Matt Behrens, Mazurkiewicz, Patterson and VanDriel.  The Spartans qualified for the MITCA Team State Meet in Jenison on 5/23/09.

GIRLS:  The Spartans outscored second place Forest Hills Eastern 120 to 100.33 to become the 2009 Regional Champions.   Placing first for the girls were Andrea Kober in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles, Halley Love in the pole vault, the 800 meter relay team of Kober, Love, Lydia Reyburn and Kelsey Blystone, and the 1600 meter relay team of Paige Urlaub, Chelsea Andrews, Samantha Pfeffer and Kober.  Kober's time of 15.6 set a new school record in the 100 meter hurdles. The girls also qualified for the MITCA Team State Meet in Jenison on 5/23/09.

05/11 -- OK Blue JV Conference Meet at Sparta

BOYS:  The Sparta boys placed third in the meet.  Clay Weidenhamer placed first in both the shot put and the discus.   Weidenhamer improved his Millinneum Milestones freshman record in the discus to 121' 4".

GIRLS:  The girls were the meet champions and were first in 9 events.  First place finishers included Erika Lang, Brooke Beuschel, Kelsey Thome, Claire Gill, Kaitlyn Balderas, Monica Kober, Tiphany Feirick, Brittany George and Jill Klein.


05/08 -- OK Blue Conference Meet Finals at Comstock Park

BOYS:  The Spartans placed first in the OK Blue Conference Meet with a great team effort.  Combined with the dual record, they tied for the league championship with West Catholic. This was the fourth consecutive league championship for the boys.  In adiition to Josh Patterson's win in the pole vault on Thursday, first place finishers on Friday were the 1600 meter relay team of Ed Mazurkiewicz, Justin Lang, Josh Patterson and Nate Dahlgren, and Brandon VanDriel in the 100 meter dash.  Mazurkiewicz's second place time of 51.51 in the 400 meter dash earned him the 2nd spot on the Millennium Milestones.

GIRLS:  The girls placed second in the Conference Meet and tied for the league championship with West Catholic.  This was the fifth consecutive league championship for the Spartans.  Andrea Kober placed first in both the 100 and 300 meter hurdles.  The 800 meter relay team (Kober, Halley Love, Lydia Reyburn, and Kelsey Blystone) and the 1600 meter relay team (Paige Urlaub, Chelsea Andrews, Samantha Pfeffer and Kober) also were first place finishers.

05/07 -- OK Blue Conference Meet at Comstock Park - Field events, prelims, 3200 meter relay

Thursday:  The Spartans had many great performances Thursday at the Conference Meet.  Josh Patterson and Cody DeRuischer finished first and second in the pole vault.  Patterson also placed in the high jump, tying for second place, and Nolan Rau placed fourth. The 3200 relay team of Nate Dahlgren, Matt Johnson, Jake VerSluys and Ed Mazurkiewicz placed second.  Cody Chamberlain was fourth in the shot put and used a personal best to finish third in the discus.  Freshman Kyle Rauser rounded out the Sparta scoring with a fifth place finish in the long jump.  The Spartans lead the meet after day one's competition.  DeRuischer earned the third spot and sophomore record for pole vault on the Millennium Milestones record board.  Clay Weidenhamer threw 119' 02" to improve his freshman Millennium record in the discus.  

Lydia Reyburn had a personal best in the long jump for the girls placing second with 16'.  She earned the second spot on the Millinneum Milestones for the long jump.


05/04 -- Sparta vs. Forest Hills Northern and Grand Rapids Central at Comstock Park

BOYS:  The boys defeated Northern 69-67 and Central by 111-25.  Nate Dahlgren won the 800 and 1600 meter runs and was on the winning 1600 and 3200 meter relay teams.  Eddie Mazurkiewicz earned a spot on the Millennium Milestones record board with his time of 51.72 in the 400 meter dash.   Clay Weidenhamer improved his freshman record in the shot put on the Millennium Milestones with 44'.5".

GIRLS:  The girls also won both their duals, 85-52 over Northern and 115-16 over Central.  Andrea Kober won both hurdle events and was on the winning 800 and 1600 meter relay teams. Kober's time of 46.23 in the 300 meter hurdles improved her time on the school record board.  Kelsey Blystone won the 100 and 200 meter dashes and was on two winning relay teams.


04/28 -- Sparta vs. West Catholic at Sparta

BOYS:  Despite many excellent performances, the boys lost a heartbreaker to West Catholic by a point, 69-68.   The Spartans dominated the field events.  Josh Patterson placed first in the pole vault and high jump, Cody Chamberlain won both the discus and shot put, and Kyle Rauser was first in the long jump.  Ed Mazurkiewicz won the 400 meter dash and Nate Dahlgren won the 800 meter run.  The 800 meter relay team (Matt Behrens, Devon Fairman, Mazurkiewicz, Patterson) and the 1600 meter relay team (Mazurkiewicz, Justin Lang, Fairman, Dahlgren) also placed first.

GIRLS:  The girls defeated West Catholic by a score of 74-63.  Andrea Kober improved her school record time in the 300 meter hurdles to 46.56.  First place finishers for the Spartans were Michelle Michel in the discus, Kober in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles, and Kelsey Blystone in the 100 and 200 meter dashes.  All four relay teams placed first.  Relay team members were Katelyn Cnossen, Paige Urlaub, Natalie Klenk, Allison Scheidel, Halley Love, Lydia Reyburn, Megan Heimbaugh, Samantha Pfeffer, Chelsea Andrews, Kober and Blystone.

04/25 -- Big Cat Invitational at Northview (all events were not completed due to thunderstorms.)

BOYS:  The boys tied for 3rd place in the Big Cat Invitational.  The 3200 meter relay team of Ed Mazurkiewicz, Matt Johnson, Jake VerSluys and Nate Dahlgren placed first with a time of 9:05.57.  Dahlgren also won the 800 meter run with a time of 2:00.49.  Nolan Rau placed first in the high jump with a jump of 6'.  Clay Weidenhamer set the Millennium Milestones record for freshmen in the discus with 111'.

GIRLS:  The girls placed 2nd in the meet.  Andrea Kober placed first in both the 100 and 300 meter hurdles.  Paige Urlaub ran a personal best in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:03.8.


04/23 -- Sparta vs. Coopersville, Comstock Park and Belding at Coopersville

BOYS:  The boys had a very successful day with many outstanding performances and an overall great team effort.  The Spartans defeated all three opponents in the triple dual.  Scores were as follows:   Sparta 81  Belding 56 -- Sparta 95  Comstock Park 42 -- Sparta 88   Coopersville 49.  Nolan Rau's 6' 2" high jump effort earned him a spot on the Millennium Milestones.  Nate Dahlgren won the 800 and 1600 meter runs and was also on 2 winning relay teams.

GIRLS:  The girls also won all three of their duals with an excellent team effort.  Scores were as follows:  Sparta 112  Belding 25 --
Sparta 104  Comstock Park 32 -- Sparta 92  Coopersville 45.  Andrea Kober won both hurdle events and was part of 2 winning relay teams.

04/18 -- Tri-Level Classic (Boys at Coopersville - Girls at Sparta)

BOYS:  The 11th and 12th grade boys placed 5th in the meet.  First place finishers were Josh Patterson, Brandon VanDriel and Nate Dahlgren.  The 9th and 10th grade boys also placed 5th in their level.   Taking first place honors were Brandon George and Clay Weidenhamer.  Weidenhamer's toss of 41' 9" in the shot put earned him the Millennium Milestones record for freshmen.

GIRLS:  The 11th and 12th grade girls placed 2nd in their competition.  Winning events for the Spartans were Allison Scheidel, Paige Urlaub, Natalie Klenk, Katelyn Cnossen, Andrea Kober, Lydia Reyburn, Chelsea Andrews, Stephanie Hull, Halley Love and Samantha Pfeffer.  The 9th and 10th grade girls won their level.  First place finishers were Halley Love, Megan Heimbaugh, Kelsey Blystone, Brittany George, Allison Scheidel and Natalie Klenk.

(Note:  9th and 10th grade athletes can move up a division in relays.)


04/14 -- Sparta vs. Cedar Springs at Sparta

BOYS:  The boys lost a squeaker to Cedar Springs by the score of 69-68.  First place finishers for Sparta were Nolan Rau, Josh Patterson, Cody Chamberlain, Brandon VanDriel, Nate Dahlgren, Brandon George, Matt Johnson and Eddie Mazurkiewicz.

GIRLS:  The girls defeated the Red Hawks 99-38.  First place finishers for the Spartans were Katelyn Cnossen, Halley Love, Allison Scheidel, Paige Urlaub, Natalie Klenk, Andrea Kober, Kelsey Blystone, Chelsea Andrews, Lydia Reyburn, Stephanie Hull and Samantha Pfeffer.


04/09 -- Spring Break Scrimmage at Kent City

In the 8-team Spring Break Scrimmage at Kent City on Thursday, the Spartans enjoyed the nice weather and performed well.   Kelsey Blystone and Brandon VanDriel won both sprint events.  VanDriel also combined with Matt Behrens, Joel Elderkin and Eddie Mazurkiewicz to win both sprint relays.  Brandon George had personal bests in both the 1600 and 3200 meter runs.   Megan Heimbaugh won the 100 meter hurdles and Paige Urlaub won the 800 meter run.   Team scores are not kept at scrimmages.


03/19 -- Co-ed Relays at Thornapple-Kellogg

BOYS/GIRLS:  The team earned runner-up honors, missing first place by only 1/2 point.  First place finishers were: Josh Patterson and Katelyn Cnossen in the high jump relay; Katelyn Cnossen, Brandon George, Ally Scheidel and Nate Dahlgren in the 6400 relay; Megan Heimbaugh, Colton Cnossen, Andrea Kober, and Mason Trimble in the shuttle hurdles relay; Ed Mazurkiewicz, Paige Urlaub, Nate Dahlgren and Katelyn Cnossen in the 3200 relay; Andrea Kober, Brandon VanDriel, Lydia Reyburn, and Nate Dahlgren in the middle distance relay.


03/19 -- Meet at Central Michigan University

BOYS:  The Spartans kicked off their season on Thursday in an indoor meet at Central Michigan University.  Sprinter Brandon VanDriel placed first in the 60 meter dash in a time of 7.04 seconds.  Josh Patterson took first place in the pole vault with a vault of 14'.  Patterson was second in the high jump at 6'2" and Nolan Rau placed fifth with a jump of 6'.    The 3200 relay team (Nate Dahlgren, Ed Mazurkiewicz, Brandon George, Jake VerSluys) was 2nd with a time of 8:55, and the 1600 meter relay team (Dahlgren, Mazurkiewicz, Patterson, Justin Lang) was 6th with a time of 3:45.46.  Patterson earned 1st place in the pole vault on the Millennium Milestones records, and tied for 2nd in the high jump.

GIRLS:  Andrea Kober placed first in the 60 meter hurdles in 9.78.  Kelsey Blystone placed 6th in the 60 meter dash.  The 3200 relay team (Ally Scheidel, Katelyn Cnossen, Natalie Klenk, Chelsea Andrews) placed 2nd in 8:55.  The 800 meter relay team (Kober, Halley Love, Lydia Reyburn, Blystone) was 4th in 1:56.25.  Michele Michel earned the second spot on the Millennium Milestones in the shot put with 32' 10".


03/09 -- First day of practice!


02/28 -- Sparta seniors Josh Patterson and Brandon VanDriel were state qualifiers at the Michigan High School State Indoor Track Championship at Central Michigan University on Saturday, February 28.  Patterson placed 3rd in the high jump and tied for 7th in the pole vault.  VanDriel placed 4th in the 60 meter dash.

02/13 -- Coach Ted Smith was a finalist for Coach of the Year by the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association.

02/12 -- Senior sprinter Brandon VanDriel has earned a track scholarship to Michigan State University.  Pictured are VanDriel and his parents, along with senior wrestler Adam Miller and his parents.  Miller earned a wrestling scholarship to Central Michigan University.
